NYC DOT Art program: Alex Strada, DCLA, and DHS (October 2025)

NYC Department of Transportation’s Art program (NYC DOT Art) is partnering with Alex Strada, the Department of Cultural Affairs, the Department of Homeless Services, and the Storefront for Art and Architecture to present a signage installation on DOT signposts and streetlight poles throughout Brooklyn. Titled, “Public Address,” the artwork is the culmination of Strada’s three years as a Public Artist in Residency (PAIR) imbedded at the Department of Homeless Services. Over that time, Strada held log writing workshops across the boroughs engaging over 300 people living or working in the NYC shelter system in personal reflection and expression.

This socially engaged artwork is aimed at destigmatizing homelessness by providing a platform for people living and working in city shelters to address the greater public. The display period is April 2026 through March 2027 and will be installed in conjunction with a larger sign installation at Columbus Park (through the NYC Parks Department). The project is currently installed in Manhattan and will continue to iterations in all five boroughs. NYC DOT Art Partners (formerly “Arterventions”) invites arts and community-based organizations exhibit temporary artwork such as murals, sculptures, or interventions on NYC DOT property in collaboration with professional artists.
