We know that many of you may still have questions about your property exemptions or rent freeze applications. Through August 11, the Department of Finance will be providing one-on-one assistance for various programs—including the Senior Citizen Homeowner Exemption (SCHE), Disabled Homeowner Exemption (DHE), Senior Citizen Rent Increase Exemption (SCRIE), and Disability Rent Increase Exemption (DRIE)–at their walk-in centers in Manhattan, Brooklyn, and the Bronx. Residents can sit down with DOF staff to get the help they need.

 

Common SCHE/DHE questions and issues that they can answer or resolve include:

 

  • How do I renew my application?
  • What is the status of my application?
  • Which exemptions do I currently receive, and are there others I might be eligible for?
  • What options are available if my application was declined or I lost my exemption due to an increase in my income?

 

Constituents interested in the rent freeze programs can visit their centers to find out:

 

  • Whether they are eligible for either exemption.
  • How to complete an initial or renewal application.
  • The status of existing applications.
  • What to do if their SCRIE or DRIE exemptions were revoked.
