Please join NYC Parks Commissioner Mitchell J. Silver and  Mr. Yoichi Masuzoe, Governor of Tokyo, for a ceremonial cherry tree planting in Prospect Park on April 13, 2016 at 10am.

In 1960, New York City and Tokyo entered into a Sister City relationship – the first for both cities – and for over half a century both have worked to deepen that relationship through a variety of initiatives as two of the world’s major cities.  The relationship between New York and Japan, however, stretches back much further in time, including the gift, in 1912, of cherry trees presented by the Committee of Japanese Residents of New York. To mark the centennial of this gift, the Tokyo Metropolitan Government decided in 2013 to again give cherry trees to symbolize another 100 years of friendship.  The seedlings come from the Miharu Takizakura cherry tree in Fukushima, Japan.  This venerable sakura tree, whose estimated age is more than 1000 years old, is one of the three most famous cherry trees in Japan.

On April 13th, the first of these seedlings will be planted in Prospect Park. We invite you to join us in celebrating the long friendship between New York City and Tokyo.
