City of New York - Home Page

WELCOME to COMMUNITY BOARD 8!

The City of New York is divided into fifty-nine geographic community districts, served by a local representative body known as a Community Board. Each Community Board is composed of up to fifty unsalaried individuals who either live in or have an interest in the community, selected to serve on the board by the Borough President or local City Council representatives.

Brooklyn Community Board No. 8 represents parts of Crown Heights, Prospect Heights, and Weeksville.  We are bounded by Atlantic Avenue (north side, even numbers) to Eastern Parkway (south side, odd numbers) and Ralph Avenue (east side, even numbers) to Flatbush Avenue (west side, odd numbers).

Community Board Responsibilities

Land Use and Zoning

All Community Boards, regardless of their geographic location, are involved with land use and zoning issues.  We participate in the application process of individuals who wish to acquire, manage, or significantly change the status use of any city-owned property, or change the zoning status of privately owned property within the District.  The Board's role in such a situation would be to hold public hearings with members of the board and community residents that would be most significantly affected to hear presentations by those who wish to do either of the above, and propose recommendations on the matter.

Land Use matters are reviewed by the Community Board in accordance with the City's Uniformed Land Use Review Procedure (ULURP).

Education is a top priorityBudget

The City Charter mandates that Community Boards participate in the budget process for the City of New York.  The board has two formal opportunities to consult with agency officials about budget needs and funding of programs and projects in the community.  Consultations take place at two levels:

District Level

The District Manager and Committee Chairpersons meet with the City's agency's local representatives to discuss the needs of the district, status of service delivery, and resources needed to improve services rendered.

The board helps represent your interests within governmentBorough Level

The Community Board meets with Agency Commissioners to discuss budget requests and needs and priorities of the district in an attempt to provide the services and funding needed to improve the conditions and quality of life for the residents in the community.

We are required to submit to the Mayor and City Council capital and expense budget priorities that would be taken into consideration in the formulation of the City's overall budget.  Public hearings are also held by the Community Board, the Borough President's Office, and the City Council before the budget is adopted.

Service Delivery

We are involved with many issues facing residents within our district, such as housing complaints against landlords, street defect complaints, water complaints, and other issues concerning the quality of life.  We do our best to rectify any and all problems that involve the input of other City agencies in a timely manner.

We also handle community complaints such as potholes, trees that require pruning, missing, damaged, or incorrect street signs, malfunctioning street lights, clogged catch basins, leaky hydrants, bypassed garbage collection, heat and hot water-or lack thereof, and a host of other types of complaints.  Any complaints we do not handle, most likely, we will be able to direct you to the proper authority that will handle it.

The District office is also responsible for processing street activity permits for street closings, block parties, street festivals, and clean-ups.  Bus and Subway group passes are also available for organizations sponsoring youth programs.
